Unsilently

September - October 2005 @ The Contemporary Artists Center, North Adams MA. This group exhibition featured a variety of audio works composed of sounds derived from "silent" spaces (i.e. the hiss of a blank tape, the hum of an empty room, intricate artifacts, occasional crackles). The sound recordings and compositions were presented together throughout the galleries of the Contemporary Artists Center: darkened spaces with only minimal light for navigation purposes. Sound isolation between the pieces was not the intent of the show, consequently an entire environment of sound is created. The pieces, comprised of backround "noise" (the natural hum of time passing, crackles, hisses, pops) , provided background noise for eachother, and the bleed between the sources created a complex composition. "Unsilently" was an experiment, an accident, and chance for 'silence' to be heard.

60" somewhere / 60" somewhere else

Morse coded words/tones were composed into several channels of audio and recorded onto a set of cds. Many big box stores, such as Walmart, Best Buy, Kmart, Target, Circuit City, have sample electronic merchandise out and readily available to insert and play cds (cd players, boom boxes, dvd players...). The morse code message/composition disks are be placed in those devices (each disk had a minute of silence to provide get away time). In almost every case so far, what resulted was a curiosity, an exciment of discovery, and a shift away from the often dazed mode of consumption.
